On Wednesday, Dec. 14, Harvard Law School Professor John Coates testified (PDF) before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Subcommittee on Securities, Insurance and Investment at an open-session hearing titled “Examining Investor Risks in Capital Raising.”
In addition to Coates, Stephen Luparello, vice chairman of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Mark Hiraide, partner at Petillon, Hiraide, Loomis, Kate Mitchell, managing director, Scale Venture Partners, and Barry Silbert , CEO, SecondMarket Inc., also testified.
Coates is the John F. Cogan, Jr. Professor of Law and Economics at Harvard Law School and research director at Harvard’s Program on the Legal Profession. His current research at Harvard includes empirical studies of the purchasing of legal services by S&P 500 companies, the causes and consequences of the completion or failure of M&A transactions, mutual funds and the effects of their regulation, and the causes and consequences of CEO and CLO turnover.
Coates is a frequent panelist and speaker on M&A, and a consultant to the SEC, law firms, mutual funds, hedge funds, and other participants in the M&A and capital markets. He also is a member of the Legal Advisory Committee of the New York Stock Exchange and is a past director of the American Law and Economics Association.
