Robert Greenwald, lecturer on law and director of the health law clinic and the LGBT family law clinic at the WilmerHale Legal Services Center, was appointed to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA).

The council provides advice, information, and recommendations to the president through the Secretary of Health and Human Services on domestic and global HIV/AIDS policy issues. It also serves to further the policy goals of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy and it will play an important role in providing input for the National HIV/AIDS Strategy.

Greenwald is one of 24 new members appointed to the council, which is made up of a diverse group of researchers, service providers, and community leaders from around the country, including people living with HIV.

After joining the HLS clinical program in 1987, Greenwald founded the AIDS Law Clinic and Medical Legal Services program at the Legal Services Center.  He currently manages and develops the center’s HELLP unit, which provides legal services in the areas of employment, consumer, insurance, disability, and estate planning. In addition, he runs an independent policy and law-consulting firm serving government, private and community sector clients.

Greenwald has served as the director of public policy and legal affairs for the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts, as an advisor to the President’s National Commission on AIDS, as a board member of the AIDS Action Council of Washington D.C. and the National Lesbian and Gay Bar Association, and as a visiting professor at Northeastern University School of Law.

At HLS, he teaches Family, Domestic Violence and LGBT Law: Litigating in the Family Courts, as well as the clinical workshop Health, Disability and Estate Planning: Law and Policy.

In February, Greenwald received the HLS Lambda Leadership Award at the organization’s annual conference on legal advocacy issues for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.
