HLS Professor Elizabeth Warren was named the “Bostonian of the Year” for 2009 by the Boston Globe. The annual award, which recognizes people who have made the greatest impact on the region, was awarded to Warren for her role as chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel on the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).

Warren will be featured in a special edition of the Globe Magazine, available in The Boston Globe on Sunday, December 20.

In choosing Warren, the Globe Magazine cited her work as TARP chairman. The article states: “The great cause of her life has been defending middle-class Americans against what she calls the ‘tricks and traps’ the nation’s financial institutions devise to separate those citizens from their money.”

In addition to an in-depth profile of Warren, the Globe created a video of Warren and her work in Washington, D.C.

Warren is the Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law at HLS, a position she has held since 1995.  She joined HLS in 1992 as the Robert Braucher Visiting Professor of Law. GQ Magazine recently named Warren to its 2009 list of the “50 Most Powerful People in D.C.”  In May, Time Magazine listed her as one of 100 Most Influential People in 2009. She is included in the Leaders & Revolutionaries category of the annual TIME publication naming the people who most affect our world.

The “Bostonian of the Year” is selected by the editors of The Boston Globe Magazine, with input from Globe readers. This is the seventh year that the Globe Magazine has selected a Bostonian of the Year.  Previous winners have included Celtics Player Paul Pierce, Governor Deval Patrick, housing activist Bruce Marks, Big Dig whistleblower Edward Ginsburg and Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein.
