Brian T. Aune ’10 and Jennifer D. Dein ’11 won the top two spots in the HLS 2009-2010 student government elections held on March 18 and 19. Aune was elected president and Dein was elected vice-president.
This year, more than 800 HLS students voted to elect five executive board positions and several 2L and 3L representatives. Winners include: Hrishi Hari ’11, treasurer; Marissa Ronk ’11, student advocate; Ilana Ettinger ’11, internal affairs coordinator; as well as six 3L representatives (Sheila Lopez ’10, Andrea Miller ’10, Jessica Nachman ’10, Peter Ostrovski ’10, Maxine Perkins ’10 and Nilab Rahyar ’10) and four 2L representatives (Jon Kurland ’11, Sam Matthew ’11, Pablo Ros ’11 and Will Scharf ’11).
In an interview with the Harvard Crimson, see story, Aune said, “We have to focus on continuing the legacy of Dean Kagan. But beyond that, there’s a lot of little things that student government can do—what students want improved at the cafeteria for example, and trying to be better about communicating that to the administration.”
Aune said listening to student concerns and communicating them to the administration will be the main focus of this year’s student leaders.
In an op-ed in the March 5, 2009, Harvard Law Record, outgoing Student Government President David K. Kessler ’09 urged students to consider running for student government positions, noting the role the past year’s officers played. “[K]eep in mind how Student Government advocated for student interests in the big changes at HLS this year, such as the new grading system and the Early Interview program. We have also brought about numerous smaller positive changes, including longer Hark hours, toasters for morning bagels, first-grade-release candy for 1Ls, pens in the vending machines, and even Heinz ketchup in the Hark,” he wrote.
